Dr George Elombi has officially assumed office as the new Afreximbank President, succeeding Prof Benedict Oramah at a colourful inauguration ceremony held at the St Regis Almasa Convention Center in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital. The grand event drew African leaders, finance ministers, and top dignitaries from across the continent, celebrating the historic transition at the helm of the African Export–Import Bank. The appointment of Dr Elombi marks the beginning of a new era in the institution’s drive to promote intra-African trade and economic transformation.

The new Afreximbank President, a seasoned Cameroonian banker and legal expert, brings nearly three decades of experience within the institution. Dr Elombi joined the bank in 1996 and has held several strategic positions, including Executive Vice President for Governance, Legal & Corporate Services. His elevation, endorsed by the Afreximbank Board of Directors and shareholders, signals confidence in his leadership and vision to consolidate the bank’s reputation as Africa’s foremost trade finance institution.

In his inaugural address, the Afreximbank President reaffirmed his commitment to deepening the bank’s mandate of financing trade, supporting industrialization, and strengthening the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He emphasized that Afreximbank would continue to play a catalytic role in unlocking Africa’s potential through innovation, sustainable investment, and regional cooperation. “This is a defining moment for Africa’s transformation, and Afreximbank will stand at the center of that process,” Dr Elombi stated.

The outgoing president, Prof Benedict Oramah, who led Afreximbank for nearly a decade, was lauded for his visionary leadership and expansion of the bank’s portfolio to over $30 billion. Dignitaries at the event, including Egypt’s Prime Minister, African ministers of finance, and Central Bank governors, praised Oramah for positioning Afreximbank as a continental powerhouse. They expressed optimism that the new Afreximbank President would sustain and accelerate the bank’s growth trajectory.

Under Dr Elombi’s leadership, the Afreximbank President is expected to focus on strengthening partnerships with African governments, financial institutions, and the private sector. His agenda prioritizes innovative trade financing, digital transformation, and climate-resilient investments. Stakeholders say his deep institutional knowledge and understanding of Africa’s economic landscape give him a unique edge to navigate the complexities of continental trade.

The inauguration of the new Afreximbank President was marked by cultural displays, speeches from African leaders, and the symbolic handover of instruments of office. The audience, made up of delegates from over 50 African countries, gave standing ovations as Dr Elombi pledged to “deepen the bank’s continental presence and strengthen Africa’s global trade voice.” His remarks resonated strongly with participants who described the transition as “a seamless continuation of visionary leadership.”

For many observers, Dr George Elombi’s ascension as Afreximbank President underscores the bank’s commitment to leadership continuity and African excellence. His stewardship is expected to build on ongoing projects such as the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX), and industrial parks across the continent. Analysts believe that his tenure will bring renewed focus to Africa’s economic resilience and trade independence.

As the new Afreximbank President takes charge, expectations are high across Africa’s financial community. His inauguration not only represents a change of leadership but also a reaffirmation of Afreximbank’s mission to drive Africa’s prosperity through trade and industrialization. With the confidence of shareholders and the goodwill of member states, Dr George Elombi begins his presidency with a strong mandate to write the next chapter in Africa’s financial renaissance. http://Gmtnewsng.com
