President Bola Tinubu has praised Nigeria’s aviation sector after the country achieved a record 91.45% safety rating from ICAO, surpassing regional and global averages.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s impressive 91.45 per cent aviation safety rating from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), describing it as a major boost for the country’s global credibility and investment appeal.

The rating was announced during a recent debriefing by the ICAO audit team at the Abuja headquarters of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), where Nigeria recorded its highest-ever Effective Implementation (EI) score.

ICAO, a United Nations agency, oversees global civil aviation standards and works to ensure the safe and orderly development of international air transport.

Through its Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP), the organisation evaluates how effectively member states manage safety risks and implement critical oversight systems.

According to the latest audit, Nigeria’s 91.45 per cent score places the country significantly above the West African regional average of 61.1 per cent and the global average of 70.4 per cent.

The development is expected to strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector, attract investors, and enhance the country’s standing in international air transport.

Since assuming office, President Tinubu has prioritised infrastructure and transportation reforms, with a focus on making the air transport sector a key driver of economic growth.

The administration aims to build a safe, secure, and efficient aviation industry that positions Nigeria as a leading hub meeting international standards.

To support this vision, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, introduced a five-point agenda for expanding the Nigerian aviation value chain.

A key pillar of that agenda is strict compliance with safety regulations and continuous improvement in Nigeria’s ICAO performance rating.

President Tinubu commended the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development for achieving the milestone, saying the result confirms Nigeria’s high safety standards.

He noted that the strong aviation rating makes Nigeria a more attractive destination for investment in airport infrastructure, maintenance facilities, and airline operations.

The President also urged the ministry to implement all recommendations made by ICAO auditors to ensure Nigeria maintains and improves on its current performance.
