The Kano State Government has finalised plans for a mass wedding for 1,500 couples under its social welfare programme, with medical screening and community endorsement required for participants.
The Kano State Government has concluded arrangements to conduct a mass wedding for 1,500 couples under its marriage social welfare initiative known as “Auren Gata.”
The Deputy Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Dr. Mujahideen Aminudeen, disclosed this on April 23, 2026, during an interview with journalists in Kano.
According to Aminudeen, the wedding initiative is being implemented under the leadership of Governor Abba Yusuf as part of efforts to support vulnerable members of society.
He explained that the decision to organise another large-scale wedding exercise followed the successes recorded in previous editions of the programme.
The official said positive outcomes from earlier exercises encouraged the government to commit more resources to sustain the initiative and expand its reach.
He added that Governor Yusuf had directed that all preparations for the mass wedding be completed before the end of May 2026.
Aminudeen said the scheme was designed to promote social stability and assist individuals willing to begin family life through marriage.
He noted that intending couples must follow laid-down procedures before being considered for the programme.
The requirements include obtaining endorsement from relevant traditional leaders within their respective communities.
Applicants are also expected to give mutual consent to live together as husband and wife before completing and submitting forms for approval.
The Hisbah official dismissed allegations that the board forces marriages on participants or selects beneficiaries without due process.
He maintained that participation in the wedding programme is entirely voluntary and based on the willingness of both parties.
Aminudeen further stated that all prospective couples would undergo medical screening to ensure compatibility.
The tests include HIV screening, genotype checks, and other medical examinations aimed at ensuring the health of intending partners.
He added that pregnancy tests would also be conducted for women applicants as part of measures to safeguard the dignity and well-being of participants.
