Afghanistan’s government has confirmed that two U.S. citizens are in custody for allegedly violating local laws, describing the case as minor and potentially resolvable.
The government of Afghanistan has confirmed that two citizens of the United States are currently in detention after allegedly violating local laws.
Government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid disclosed this on Friday during an interview with a local broadcaster.
Mujahid said the individuals were arrested for breaking Afghan laws but described the case as not serious.
According to him, authorities are working toward a possible resolution.
The confirmation comes days after Marco Rubio, the United States Department of State Secretary of State, announced that Washington had formally designated Afghanistan as a “state sponsor of wrongful detention.”
The designation was made earlier in the week, raising concerns about the treatment of foreign nationals in the country.
In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan issued a statement expressing regret over the U.S. decision.
The ministry rejected the basis for the designation and insisted that Afghanistan does not detain foreign nationals for political leverage or prisoner exchanges.
It maintained that the detained individuals were held solely for violating domestic laws.
