President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over a boat accident in Gorau Community, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, which claimed several lives and left others missing.
In a condolence message issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the incident as a tragic loss and extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims as well as the government and people of Sokoto State.
“The news of this boat mishap deeply saddens me. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families during this difficult time,” the President said.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and asked God to grant their families the strength to cope with the loss.
President Tinubu also commended emergency responders and local authorities involved in the rescue and recovery efforts following the accident.
The President directed relevant federal agencies, including the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to work closely with the Sokoto State Government in responding to the incident.
He further ordered the agencies to take steps aimed at preventing similar accidents in the future, stressing the need for strict enforcement of safety standards on Nigeria’s inland waterways.
The President also prayed for the quick recovery of those injured in the accident and assured the people of Sokoto State of the Federal Government’s support during the difficult period.
The incident occurred in Gorau Community, within Goronyo Local Government Area, an area where communities rely on waterways for transportation and other economic activities.
The President’s directive underscores the need for stronger safety measures, effective emergency response systems and closer coordination between federal and state authorities to reduce risks associated with inland water transportation.
The search and recovery efforts are expected to continue as authorities work to account for those still missing and provide support to affected families.
