The Enugu health system has received a major boost as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) donated vehicles, equipment, and training tools to the Enugu State Colleges of Nursing at Park Lane and Awgu. The donations come in recognition of Governor Peter Mbah’s bold and strategic investments in health infrastructure, digital transformation, and human resource development, positioning the state as a model for health system excellence in Nigeria.
The donations included two 15-seater Toyota Hiace commuter buses, two Mikano diesel generators, 145 desktop computers, five suction machines, eight sets of 3D electronic boards, 13 Sharp three-in-one photocopiers, and numerous laboratory, training, nursing, and hostel equipment.
At the handover ceremony in Government House, Enugu, WHO Country Director and Head of Mission, Nigeria, Dr. Pavel Ursu, explained that the donations followed a comprehensive infrastructure readiness assessment of the Enugu State Colleges of Nursing under the Equipment Support for Health Training Institutions (ESHTI) initiative. He praised Governor Mbah for his commitment to Enugu health system strengthening, citing the construction of 260 Type 2 Primary Health Centres, solarisation of health facilities, and the ongoing Enugu International Hospital project.
Dr. Ursu highlighted the digital transformation under Mbah’s administration, including the digitisation of PHCs and secondary health facilities, equipping over 360 health facilities with tablets, internet, and Electronic Health Record systems, and the implementation of real-time data dashboards to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.
He also commended the governor’s investment in human resources, noting the approval for recruitment of 2,200 health workers, 450 of whom have already been onboarded, and the support to nursing institutions through accreditations, diploma approvals, and integration into the JAMB portal.
FCDO Nigeria Health Advisor, Dr. Ebere Anyachukwu, lauded the governor’s efforts in transforming the Enugu health system, noting that the partnership with WHO and FCDO aims to strengthen the quality and effectiveness of the health workforce in Enugu.
Governor Mbah, in his remarks, thanked WHO and FCDO for the donations, stating that the items would support the administration’s vision to eradicate poverty and boost the state’s economy. He emphasized plans to train at least 3,000 healthcare professionals annually and assured that more hostels and classrooms would be constructed across the nursing colleges, including Oji River campus, while also completing two new six-floor blocks at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Health Matters, Dr. Yomi Jaye, described the donations as an endorsement of the Mbah Administration’s transformation of nursing training institutions and Enugu health system, which had previously been at risk of neglect by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
