Umuahia, November 7, 2025

The Abia State Government has approved a remarkable 1,150 percent increase in the monthly allowance of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving within the state, raising it from ₦4,000 to between ₦20,000 and ₦50,000.

The announcement was made in a statement issued in Umuahia by Mr. Njoku Ukoha, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, and made available to newsmen on Friday.

According to Ukoha, the new allowance structure introduces a ₦20,000 base payment for all corps members serving in Abia State. Those posted to government establishments will receive an additional ₦10,000, making their total ₦30,000 monthly. Teaching and medical corps members will receive an extra ₦30,000 as special incentives, bringing their total to ₦50,000.

He described the increase as a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to youth empowerment, welfare, and human capital development through the NYSC programme.

“The Otti-led administration is determined to make life easier and more rewarding for corps members serving in Abia,” Ukoha said.

He recalled that the state government had earlier renovated the NYSC Orientation Camp in Umuna, Bende Local Government Area, with improvements that included internal road repairs, power installations, and building refurbishments.

Ukoha added that Governor Alex Otti believes every institution operating in Abia, whether state or federally owned, deserves adequate support and attention.

He praised the contributions of NYSC members to Abia’s development, particularly in the education, health, and engineering sectors, noting that their service continues to strengthen the state’s workforce and innovation base.

Highlighting the long-term impact of the NYSC scheme, Ukoha cited the example of Mr. Benson Ojeikere, a former corps member in the state who was retained after his service and eventually rose to become the current Head of Service in Abia.

Ukoha also mentioned that the Otti administration recently approved the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for health workers, extending the policy to local government health personnel to ensure parity with their federal counterparts.

He stated that the government has allocated a combined 35 percent of the current year’s budget to the health and education sectors, a move aimed at strengthening public institutions and driving sustainable development.

“The administration’s vision is to build world-class institutions capable of transforming Abia’s economy and empowering its youth for the future,” Ukoha concluded. Visit GMTNewsng for more news.
