NiMet has issued a weather alert, forecasting three days of thunderstorms, cloudiness and moderate rainfall across several parts of Nigeria from Sunday to Tuesday.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread cloudiness, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across several parts of Nigeria from Sunday to Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
In its latest three-day weather outlook, NiMet said different parts of the country would experience varying combinations of sunshine, cloud cover, thunderstorms and rainfall during the forecast period. The agency’s official weather bulletin for the period was issued by its Central Forecast Office.
For Sunday, NiMet forecast sunny skies with patches of cloud over the northern region, with possibilities of early-morning thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Borno, Taraba and Adamawa states.
Later in the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected across most parts of the northern region.
In the North-Central region, sunny skies with patches of cloud are expected, with chances of early-morning thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Kwara, Niger, Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory.
Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected over most parts of the region later in the day.
NiMet predicted cloudy conditions over the southern region on Sunday, with chances of light morning rain over parts of Oyo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.
Moderate rainfall is expected later in the day over parts of Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Imo, Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.
The forecast pattern is expected to continue into Monday, with thunderstorms and rainfall affecting several parts of the country.
On Monday morning, the northern region is expected to experience sunny skies with patches of cloud, while thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rain are possible over parts of Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara.
By the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected over parts of Yobe, Jigawa, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa states.
For the North-Central region, NiMet forecast cloudy skies with spells of sunshine, alongside morning thunderstorms and moderate rain over parts of Niger, Kwara, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory.
The southern region is expected to remain largely cloudy, with light rain possible across most parts of the South-West during the morning and moderate rainfall over parts of the South-South and South-East later in the day.
On Tuesday, NiMet forecast sunny skies with a few patches of cloud over the northern region during the morning.
Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected later in the day over parts of Katsina, Kano, Kebbi, Kaduna and the North-East.
The North-Central region is expected to have sunny skies with patches of cloud during the morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across most parts of the region in the afternoon and evening.
The southern region is expected to remain cloudy, with chances of light morning rain over parts of Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. Moderate rainfall is expected across the region later in the day.
NiMet warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in areas expected to experience severe weather conditions.
The agency advised residents to secure loose objects that could be blown away or cause injuries during strong winds.
It also urged motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall and advised residents to disconnect electrical appliances from power sockets during thunderstorms.
Residents were further advised to stay away from tall trees because of the risk of falling branches or trees.
Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports and flight documentation from NiMet to support safe and effective flight planning.
The latest forecast comes amid NiMet’s continuing efforts to provide early warnings on potentially hazardous weather conditions. The agency has also issued recent advisories on flash-flood risks affecting parts of Nigeria, underscoring the need for residents in vulnerable locations to monitor official weather updates.
