Nigerian Army troops have neutralised scores of bandits during an operation targeting Bello Turji’s hideouts in Zamfara and Sokoto states.
Troops of the Nigerian Army have neutralised scores of armed bandits during an operation targeting hideouts linked to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji.
The operation was conducted in Fakai community across Zamfara State and Sokoto State.
Security sources said the offensive, led by the 8 Division Strike Force in Sokoto, began in the early hours of March 20 and targeted camps located deep inside Kagara Forest.
During the advance, two combat support vehicles reportedly developed mechanical faults near Maberaya village, forcing troops to temporarily halt movement.
The pause allowed armed bandits to launch an ambush from elevated and forested positions.
However, troops responded with superior firepower, engaging the attackers and neutralising several of them.
Three soldiers and one operative of the Department of State Services sustained injuries and were evacuated to the 8 Division Military Hospital in Sokoto for treatment.
Security sources also dismissed reports claiming that 150 bandits drowned in a boat accident in Sabon Gida.
The National Inland Waterways Authority confirmed the claim was false, noting that the river in the area is currently not navigable. Authorities said operations against banditry would continue across the affected areas.
