A renewed budget disagreement has reignited political tensions between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Sources familiar with developments told TheCable that the latest confrontation was triggered by moves allegedly spearheaded by Wike’s associates to introduce a supplementary appropriation bill through lawmakers loyal to him in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

According to the sources, Governor Fubara strongly opposed the proposal, insisting that the budget earlier approved by the National Assembly during the period of emergency rule was sufficient to manage the affairs of the state for the remainder of 2025.

One source disclosed that the governor saw no fiscal or administrative justification for an additional appropriation at this stage.

“Governor Fubara made it clear that there was no fiscal or administrative justification for a supplementary budget at this point,” the source said, adding that the governor perceived the move as politically motivated rather than driven by governance necessities.

Another insider noted that the disagreement has further strained the already fragile relationship between both political camps.

“This budget issue has reopened old wounds and reinforced the ongoing power struggle between Wike’s loyalists and the governor’s camp, with serious implications for governance and political stability in Rivers State,” the source said.

The latest dispute underscores the deepening divisions within the state’s political structure and raises concerns over the impact of prolonged political infighting on governance in Rivers State.
