A fire outbreak on Tuesday evening destroyed parts of the popular Army Arena Market, Bolade, in the Oshodi area of Lagos, damaging several container shops before it was brought under control by emergency responders.
The incident was confirmed by the Controller General of the Lagos State Government Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, in a statement issued in Lagos.
According to her, the agency received a distress call at about 5:50 p.m., reporting a fire outbreak at the market. Firefighting crews were immediately deployed and arrived at the scene within five minutes.
Firefighters from the Bolade, Ilupeju, Ikeja and Alausa Fire Stations worked jointly to contain the blaze.
Adeseye explained that the fire affected a section of the market consisting of five 40-foot container shops arranged in two rows, bringing the total number of damaged shops to 10. The affected containers were mainly used for storing and selling clothing materials stocked in bales.
She noted that the fire was successfully confined to the affected area, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the market.
The Controller General assured residents and traders that all necessary measures were taken to protect lives and property, adding that no casualties were recorded.
She further disclosed that investigations would be conducted to determine the cause of the fire, while additional updates would be made available as findings emerge.
