Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has expressed profound grief over the tragic road accident that led to the death of seven journalists from Gombe State.
The fatal crash occurred along the Billiri–Kumo Road when the vehicle conveying the journalists reportedly suffered a tyre burst while they were returning from a wedding ceremony of a colleague with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
Seven journalists lost their lives in the incident, while four others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, Governor Mohammed described the incident as heartbreaking and a huge loss to the journalism profession, the North-East region, and Nigeria as a whole.
He noted that journalists play a critical role in strengthening democracy, promoting unity, and keeping society informed, adding that their untimely deaths were deeply painful.
“As a journalist by profession and a close neighbour to Gombe State, I commiserate with the Government and people of Gombe State. I also extend my condolences to the Nigerian Television Authority, the Nigeria Union of Journalists at both national and state levels, as well as the families and colleagues of the deceased,” Mohammed said.
The governor prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed journalists and asked Allah to grant their families the strength to bear the loss, while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
