Rep Obi Aguocha has appealed to the Federal High Court in Abuja to adopt a lenient approach in the sentencing phase of the terrorism case involving Nnamdi Kanu, calling for justice tempered with mercy.

Aguocha, representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, made the plea directly to Justice James Omotosho after the court convicted the defendant on all seven counts filed by the Federal Government. The judge suspended proceedings and scheduled sentencing for 4 p.m., allowing counsel and stakeholders to make final submissions.

During the hearing, the prosecution, led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, urged the court to impose the maximum penalty, citing the deaths of more than 75 security personnel and multiple civilian casualties linked to the violent acts attributed to the defendant’s followers.

The appeal for leniency comes as the court prepares to deliver a judgment that will significantly shape public discourse around national security, justice, and the broader implications of the activities associated with Nnamdi Kanu.
