A tragic incident in Akure has led to the death of an NSCDC personnel, who was fatally stabbed by a mentally unstable boy during an attempt to restrain him. The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the development on Thursday, describing the attack as deeply disturbing and avoidable.

The incident occurred at Oke-Ala in Oba-Ile, Akure North Local Government Area. According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, the officer was rushed to the hospital after sustaining multiple injuries but later died despite efforts by medical staff. Ayanlade explained that the victim had responded to a distress call from the suspect’s mother, who sought assistance in controlling her son, known in the community for long-term mental instability.

An eyewitness recounted that the situation escalated when two civil defence operatives arrived to help restrain the boy. During the struggle, the boy reportedly overpowered one of them, wrested a knife from him, and stabbed him several times. The eyewitness added that the attack happened suddenly, leaving the officers with little time to react.

“Actually, when the boy started misbehaving this morning, his mother invited two civil defence officers to help her chain him. Meanwhile, in the process, he overpowered the personnel, removed a knife from the man, and stabbed him,” the witness said.

Officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps later confirmed the loss. DSC Daniel Aidamenbor, spokesperson for the NSCDC in Ondo State, said the fallen NSCDC personnel had been attempting to restrain the boy for safe transport to a medical facility before the attack turned fatal. He described the incident as a major setback for the corps and a reminder of the risks officers face while responding to humanitarian emergencies.

The Ondo State Police Command, accessible through the Nigeria Police Force portal, has launched further investigations into the loss of life of the NSCDC personnel, while the Ondo State Government expressed concern over rising cases involving untreated mental health conditions.

Authorities say more updates will be communicated as investigations progress and the family of the deceased NSCDC personnel is formally briefed.
