As Nigeria Grapples with Insecurity, Nkanu West Chairman Ogbodo Deepens Grassroots Security, Aligns with Mbah’s Vision for Safer Communities

Enugu, Nigeria – November 11, 2025

As Nigeria continues to grapple with nationwide security challenges, the Executive Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Council, Mr. John Ogbodo, has intensified efforts to strengthen grassroots security and safeguard community assets, in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision of a safer, more productive Enugu State.

Addressing members of the LGA Local Security Operatives (Neighborhood Watch) during a strategic security meeting at the council headquarters Agbani, Mr. Ogbodo said that the sustainability of peace and progress in the country depends largely on the effectiveness of grassroots security systems. He noted that Governor Mbah’s administration has been exemplary in reforming the state’s security architecture through intelligence-led initiatives and developmental projects that empower communities and create jobs.

“Our collective resolve is to make Nkanu West a model of peace, safety, and progress,” he declared. “We must align our local security strategies with Governor Mbah’s broader reforms to ensure that every community is safe for learning, business, and agriculture.”

The meeting, which brought together key local security stakeholders including the Council’s Chief Security Officer, Mr. Ozoemena Nwobodo-Agbo, provided a platform to review ongoing operations across all wards and to renew the commitment of Neighborhood Watch personnel to proactive community policing.

Mr. Ogbodo commended the operatives for their continued dedication and sacrifices, describing them as “the first line of defense in our grassroots security network.”

He charged them to intensify patrols, surveillance, and intelligence sharing around all Smart Green School Projects and Type 2 Primary Health Centres across the local government area. He emphasized that these facilities, initiated under Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah’s transformative agenda, are critical investments in education and healthcare that must be protected from vandalism or neglect.

The council boss also directed the Neighborhood Watch to strengthen collaboration with traditional rulers, town union leaders, youth organizations, and religious institutions in promoting peace and mutual trust within communities. He particularly urged them to maintain peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders, stressing that disputes should be resolved through dialogue, mediation, and timely intelligence reporting.

He further instructed that any serious security concern or suspicious activity should be immediately escalated to his office for swift government intervention. According to him, the priority is prevention rather than reaction, as proactive intelligence remains the backbone of effective grassroots security.

“As Nigeria battles insecurity, Nkanu West LG Council Chairman, Mr. John Ogbodo, has deepened grassroots security initiatives in alignment with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision for a safer Enugu State, charging the Local Government Security Operatives to protect public assets and ensure peaceful coexistence among farmers and herders.”

“Our focus is prevention, not reaction,” Mr. Ogbodo stated. “No one should take the law into their own hands. Report every serious issue to us, and we will act swiftly. That is how we keep our people safe and our development on track.”

As part of his administration’s welfare plan, the chairman announced that the monthly stipends of Neighborhood Watch members would soon be reviewed upward to enhance morale and efficiency. “When we take care of those who protect us, they perform better. Welfare translates directly to commitment,” he added.

He also warned against vandalism and sabotage of public infrastructure, reminding all stakeholders that community progress can only thrive in an atmosphere of order and shared responsibility.

The interactive session ended with renewed pledges of cooperation among all security actors, affirming Nkanu West’s commitment to peace, unity, and sustainable development.

By empowering local vigilance structures, promoting dialogue-driven conflict resolution, and aligning local strategies with Governor Peter Mbah’s state-wide reforms, Mr. Ogbodo’s administration continues to champion grassroots security as the foundation for lasting peace and national development.
