Law enforcement in Akwa Ibom has successfully thwarted a potential tragedy by discovering and neutralizing dangerous explosives found within the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully thwarted a major security threat by neutralizing and recovering hazardous materials discovered within the premises of the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre. This breakthrough, announced on Tuesday, followed an intelligence-led operation that authorities credited with preventing an imminent tragedy.
The operation was initiated after correctional authorities reported the discovery of suspicious items near the facility. Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, immediately mobilized the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit of BomPol Base 38, Uyo, alongside tactical support teams to secure the perimeter.
A comprehensive sweep of the area led to the recovery of two 90mm high explosive rounds and a 45cm length of burning fuse. In addition to the explosives, police recovered tools associated with potential structural tampering, including a pair of pincers, a flat screwdriver, two 12mm iron chisels, and a 6cm conduit iron pipe.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team professionally rendered the devices safe, ensuring that no lives were lost and that the facility’s critical infrastructure remained intact. Following the successful neutralization of the threat, the police command reinforced security measures around the correctional facility, including increased surveillance, strict access control, and continuous patrols to deter future breaches.
The command has launched a discreet, technical investigation to identify the source of the materials and apprehend the individuals responsible. Police authorities have reassured residents that the situation is fully under control and have urged the public to maintain vigilance and report any suspicious movements in their neighborhoods to the nearest station.
