Reprisal attack leaves 11 dead in Katsina State as bandits regroup after earlier defeat, raising fresh security concerns in the region.
No fewer than 11 people have been killed in a reprisal attack by suspected bandits in Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State, underscoring persistent security challenges in the region.
The attackers had earlier attempted an assault on Saturday but were repelled by security operatives, who reportedly neutralised several members of the armed group.
The State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, confirmed the incidents in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to Mu’azu, intelligence reports indicated that a notorious bandit leader, Mohammadu Fulani, had been advancing toward strategic locations with armed fighters.
A joint security team led by the Divisional Police Officer in Kankia intercepted the group, leading to a fierce gun battle.
“Several bandits were killed, while eight motorcycles and rustled cattle were recovered during the operation,” Mu’azu said.
Despite the setback, the attackers regrouped and launched another assault around midday on Gwalgoro Village in Gyaza/Kunduru Ward.
The renewed attack resulted in the deaths of 11 civilians in what authorities described as a retaliatory strike.
Mu’azu condemned the incident as a “cowardly act of terror” against innocent residents and extended condolences to the affected families.
He commended security personnel for their swift response and professionalism, noting that actionable intelligence from community members played a crucial role in foiling the earlier attack.
The commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely information to security agencies to help prevent further violence.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to restoring peace and ensuring the protection of lives and property across Katsina State.
