Abuja – In a compelling keynote address at the 13th anniversary and unveiling of the Verbatim Media Awards 2024 in Abuja today, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State emphasized the collaborative efforts of Nigerian governors in refining the tax reform bill currently before the National Assembly. Speaking on the topic; Changing Times and Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria – Candid View of an Uncommon Patriot, he assured that the revised bill, which avoids increasing the Value Added Tax (VAT) and other stringent measures, will earn citizens’ pride upon its enactment.

“We, the governors, have made significant inputs to ensure that harsh contents are removed from the tax reform bill,” Governor Sule stated. “Nigerians will be proud of the outcome when it is eventually passed into law.”

Highlighting Nasarawa State’s commitment to economic development, Governor Sule reflected on the state’s inaugural economic summit, aptly titled “Diamond in the Rough.” He noted its success paved the way for a second summit, which remarkably did not utilize any state funds. “It was sponsored by businesses and organizations,” he revealed, underscoring the state’s ability to attract private sector investment.

The Verbatim Media Awards, organized by Verbatim Communications Limited, have become a beacon of excellence in Nigeria’s media landscape. Established in 2007, Verbatim Communications is renowned for its dedication to integrity and professionalism in publishing and media services. In recent years, the awards have honored various governors for their exemplary leadership. Notably, Governors Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State and Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State were recognized as ‘Governor of the Year’ and ‘Outstanding Governor of the Year,’ respectively. These accolades reflect their commitment to good governance, security, infrastructural development, and socio-economic transformation in their states.

The impact of media awards like Verbatim’s extends beyond mere recognition. They serve as catalysts for societal development by setting benchmarks for excellence and encouraging transparency and accountability. By celebrating achievements in various sectors, these awards motivate individuals and organizations to strive for higher standards, ultimately contributing to national progress.

Moreover, partnerships forged through such platforms amplify their influence. For instance, the collaboration between the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and Verbatim on the ‘100-Women-of-Excellence’ program highlights the role of media in promoting gender equality and empowering women in various fields.

Governor Sule’s address at the Verbatim Media Awards underscores the intertwined nature of governance, media, and economic development. By fostering policies that encourage private sector participation and recognizing excellence through reputable platforms, Nigeria continues to pave the way for sustainable growth and societal advancement.
