A leading civil society organization in Enugu State, known as Hill Top United (HTU), has urgently urged Governor Peter Mbah to appoint a Special Adviser on Security due to the continuous deterioration of the security situation since his inauguration on May 29th. The HTU believes that immediate action needs to be taken to address the escalating security challenges in the state.
Tragically, Nelson Sylvester, also known as Ofunwa, who was a representative for Eha Alumona in Nsukka Local Government Area, fell victim to a heinous act on the night of Sunday, July 16th. Allegedly attacked by unidentified gunmen in his residence, Ofunwa became the latest high-profile casualty in a series of politically motivated assassinations. These acts are attributed to the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its military wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), according to prevailing beliefs.
Following his assumption of office, Mbah wasted no time in declaring a battle against members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who have been enforcing a weekly sit-at-home order. This order was proclaimed in an attempt to pressure the federal authorities into releasing their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently in custody of the secret police.
In response to the recent tragic killing of Nelson Sylvester, a young man in his prime, the HTU emphasized how critical it is to address Enugu’s security crisis. The organization issued a statement this morning, signed by its leader Comrade Augustine Uche Udeh and Director of Publicity Chief Ambrose Ozoene, stressing the pressing need to tackle the deteriorating security situation head-on.
The HTU expresses deep concern over the alarming lack of seriousness displayed by the government in addressing the security crisis, even in the face of an incident where IPOB members allegedly attempted to set fire to Peter Mbah’s private company, Pinnacle Oil and Gas Oil Ltd, located on Chime Avenue in New Haven, Enugu, on June 19, 2023.
The organization emphasizes that security is an essential responsibility of any government worldwide, and it is troubling to witness the government’s failure to prioritize this crucial duty. The HTU underscores the urgent need for the government to take decisive action to restore and maintain security in Enugu.
The CSO expressed grave concern over the disconcerting arrangement in which the state’s security has been entrusted to Mbah’s long-term personal bodyguard, Mr. Vincent Onyeabor, who was recently elevated to the position of Senior Special Assistant on Security. The organization finds this situation to be highly unsatisfactory and alarming.
In a striking comparison to the neighboring Anambra State, the Hill Top United highlighted the proactive measures taken by Governor Chukwuma Soludo. Not only did Governor Soludo appoint a Homeland Security Commissioner, Chika Anara, but he also appointed a retired Air Vice Marshal, Ben Chiobi, as a Special Adviser on Security. The contrast between the two states’ approaches to security appointments is visibly noteworthy.
While acknowledging that Mbah has not yet appointed commissioners, the non-governmental organization raised a valid point regarding the governor’s appointment of several special advisers. They questioned the rationale behind not seeking out an individual with significant expertise in security and intelligence matters to serve as the Special Adviser on Security. Instead, they noted, the governor entrusted the state’s security to someone they described as a “pipsqueak” who had only spent a few years in the Department of State Service (DSS) before becoming his personal bodyguard upon retirement.
The organization emphasized the importance of appointing a capable and knowledgeable individual to such a critical position, highlighting the need for someone with extensive experience and proficiency in security and intelligence matters. By doing so, they argue, the governor would demonstrate a genuine commitment to enhancing the security of the state and ensuring the welfare of its citizens.
The CSO emphasized that Mbah’s primary issue is not only the lack of legitimacy due to the fact that the Enugu people did not vote for him in the governorship election held on March 18. Rather, they emphasized that his fundamental problem lies in a severe lack of capability and capacity.
Drawing a parallel, they pointed out that Dr. Chris Ngige, who later became a senator and Minister of Labour and Employment, did not emerge as the winner of the 2003 gubernatorial election in Anambra State. However, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) manipulated the results in his favour.
The CSO’s statement implies that Mbah’s deficiencies extend beyond the question of electoral legitimacy, raising concerns about his ability to effectively govern and address the pressing security challenges faced by Enugu State.
The CSO highlighted that in the case of Dr. Ngige, despite the electoral irregularities that initially favored him, he was able to validate his governorship through his outstanding performance. However, things differ when it comes to Mbah, who allegedly secured the governorship through collaboration with corrupt individuals within the Independent National Electric Commission (INEC). The CSO asserted that Mbah is simply not suitable for the position, indicating that the responsibilities and challenges that come with being a governor are beyond his capabilities.
The CSO suggests that Mbah lacks the necessary skills and qualifications to effectively fulfill the role of governor. They argue that the position of governor requires someone with greater competence and capacity, implying that Mbah is ill-equipped to handle the responsibilities and demands that come with the role.
The CSO strongly asserted that the significant rise in politically motivated assassinations throughout Enugu State since Mbah took office is a clear indication of his incompetence. They urge Mbah to overcome any feelings of inferiority or inadequacy and seek the assistance of competent and experienced security and intelligence experts to help address the crisis situation. They further suggest that such measures should be taken until Mbah’s position as governor is resolved by the Enugu State Governorship and State House of Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal, as well as the Court of Appeal.
The CSO’s counsel implies that the urgent priority should be to stabilize the security situation in Enugu State. They emphasize the need for Mbah to take decisive action by involving professionals with the relevant expertise and experience, suggesting that their involvement will be crucial until any potential legal processes involving Mbah’s governance are completed.
