The Nigeria Union of Teachers has staged a nationwide protest over the killing of a teacher in Oyo, demanding improved school security and the release of abducted staff and students amid rising teacher safety concerns.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has staged a nationwide solidarity protest to condemn the killing of a teacher in Oyo and demand the release of abducted school staff and students.
The protest, held simultaneously across the country on Tuesday, followed a directive issued by the union’s national headquarters.
Speaking during the demonstration in Abuja, the Chairman of the NUT in the Federal Capital Territory, Abdullahi Shafa, said the action was organised to register the union’s outrage over the killing of a teacher allegedly by suspected kidnappers in Oyo State.
Shafa described the incident as disturbing and unacceptable, stressing that educators should not face violence while performing their professional responsibilities.
According to him, teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area have faced growing security threats in recent weeks.
He said the slain teacher was killed while carrying out his duty of educating students, describing the incident as horrifying and damaging to the education system.
Shafa warned that insecurity targeting schools could deepen fear among teachers and negatively affect teaching and learning if urgent interventions are not implemented.
The union leader appealed to the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen protection around schools and ensure the safety of teachers and students nationwide.
He also called for improved educational infrastructure, including perimeter fencing and additional security measures designed to secure school environments.
According to him, government must prioritise creating safe spaces for learning and teaching to continue without fear.
Shafa explained that the demonstration was designed as a one-day peaceful protest, adding that any future action would depend on decisions by the union’s national leadership.
The nationwide protest was organised in solidarity with the family of the deceased teacher and to draw public attention to growing security concerns affecting Nigeria’s education sector.
