The Benue State Police Command has arrested three suspected traffickers and rescued six children during a stop-and-search operation along the Orokam–Enugu Road.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the development on Friday in Makurdi, explaining that patrol operatives intercepted a suspicious vehicle on Nov. 20. A thorough search led to the arrest of Monica Okonkwo, 57; Nkiru Nwosu, 55; and Francisca Oyechele, 57; all residents of Umude Oka, Dunukofia in Anambra State.
Edet said the police rescued five girls and one boy, all aged between seven and nine, after discovering that they were being moved under questionable circumstances from Divine Peace and Grace Orphanage in Jos, Plateau State. She added that the suspects claimed they were transporting the children to Anambra State.
According to her, the children are currently under protective custody while investigators at the State CID continue to probe the case involving the suspected traffickers.
In a separate incident, the Command responded to a report of a stolen Bajaj motorcycle traced to a compound on George Akume Way, Makurdi. When officers arrived, they found a crowd gathered around the premises.
A search of the location led to the recovery of 11 suspected stolen motorcycles, 47 seats, fuel tanks, charms, mattresses, and a single-barrel firearm. Two suspects fled but were caught by a mob across the street and lynched before police intervention. They were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Wadata, where they were confirmed dead.
Their bodies have been deposited in the hospital morgue while the State CID takes over the investigation.
Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, condemned the mob action, warning that it obstructs justice, violates human rights, and compromises ongoing investigations. He urged residents to report criminals to the police rather than resort to violence.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling criminal networks, including those connected to child movement and suspected traffickers, while ensuring public safety across the state.
