Babangida at 85: President Tinubu celebrates former military President Ibrahim Babangida, hailing his enduring legacy and contributions to Nigeria’s development.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.), on his 85th birthday, describing the former military ruler as an outstanding leader whose influence remains significant in Nigeria’s history.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended warm birthday greetings to Babangida, who turns 85 on August 17, 2026.
Tinubu described Babangida’s military career as remarkable, noting that it culminated in his emergence as Nigeria’s military President following the August 1985 coup that ousted the administration of Major General Muhammadu Buhari.
“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” the President said.
According to Tinubu, Babangida’s administration expanded the Nigerian economy, developed infrastructure and established several agencies and institutions that continue to contribute to national development.
The President also credited the former military ruler with what he described as foresight, wisdom and a sense of equity in the creation of states and other administrative structures across the country.
“But for his foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness, many states in the federation might not exist today,” Tinubu said.
Tinubu said Babangida’s name and legacy would remain firmly embedded in Nigeria’s history because of his contributions to the country’s political and socio-economic development.
The President also acknowledged Babangida’s continued influence after leaving office, noting that the former military leader had maintained a relatively quiet life at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State, while continuing to offer counsel on national affairs.
“Even in retirement, living a quiet life at his Minna Hilltop residence in Niger State, General Babangida continues to offer valuable counsel and guidance to the nation. His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations,” Tinubu said.
The President wished Babangida continued good health, strength and longevity.
“I wish you continued grace, good health, and renewed strength. May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come,” he added.
Babangida, who ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, remains one of the country’s most influential and controversial former military leaders. His administration introduced major political and economic reforms, including the Structural Adjustment Programme, while also overseeing significant changes to Nigeria’s political and administrative structure.
The birthday message comes amid renewed public reflection on Babangida’s long political career and the lasting impact of his years in power on Nigeria’s political and institutional development.
