FRSC says Ogun State recorded 415 road crashes and 161 deaths between January and May 2026, reflecting a decline in crashes, fatalities and injuries compared with the same period in 2025.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported that 161 people lost their lives in 415 road crashes recorded across Ogun State between January and May 2026.
The command’s spokesperson, Mr Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed the figures while speaking with journalists on Tuesday in Ota. According to Odunsi, a total of 1,007 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in the road crashes recorded during the five-month period.
He said the statistics represent an improvement compared with the corresponding period in 2025, when the state recorded 494 road traffic crashes, indicating a reduction of 79 crashes in 2026.
The FRSC spokesperson also noted that road crash fatalities declined from 212 deaths recorded between January and May 2025 to 161 deaths during the same period in 2026.
Similarly, the number of injured victims dropped from 1,121 in 2025 to 1,007 in 2026.
Odunsi attributed the improvement to sustained public enlightenment campaigns by FRSC personnel aimed at educating motorists and other road users on road safety practices.
“This feat couldn’t have been achieved without the intensive public enlightenment by FRSC personnel educating the public on road safety measures,” he said.
Despite the decline in crashes and casualties, Odunsi identified speeding, drunk driving, dangerous overtaking, the use of mobile phones while driving, overloading and tyre bursts as the leading causes of road accidents in the state.
He appealed to motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations to prevent avoidable road crashes and save lives.
The FRSC spokesperson reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property through stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and sustained public awareness campaigns across Ogun State.
