Police in Nasarawa State have detained a 62-year-old suspect over alleged involvement in counterfeit currency trading at the Lafia cattle market.

The Police Command in Nasarawa State has detained a 62-year-old man over alleged involvement in the circulation of counterfeit currency in the state.

The development was disclosed on April 25, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Rahman Nansel, in a statement issued in Lafia.

According to the statement, the suspect, Mamuda Hassan, a resident of Anchor Zaria in Kaduna State, was arrested by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lafia, following credible intelligence.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was apprehended at the Lafia cattle market while allegedly trading in fake N1,000 denomination currency notes.

Police said the suspect confessed during interrogation that the counterfeit notes were supplied by an accomplice residing in Mararaba Akunza, Lafia.

Authorities added that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing accomplice.

The Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Mr Shetima Mohammed, urged residents to remain vigilant in all financial transactions involving currency exchange.

He specifically advised traders, small business owners, fuel station attendants, Point of Sale (POS) operators, and motor park workers to watch out for suspicious banknotes.

According to police, common signs of fake currency include poor print quality, smaller note size, duplicated serial numbers, and absence of visible security features.

Residents were also urged to promptly report anyone found in possession of or attempting to circulate suspected counterfeit money to the nearest police station.

The command added that the suspect would be charged in court after the conclusion of investigations.
