Governor Peter Mbah has invited Chinese investors to explore opportunities in the New Enugu City project, pledging support for a proposed Chinatown district in Enugu.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has called on Chinese investors to take advantage of business opportunities in the New Enugu City project by establishing company headquarters in the state.
Mbah made the appeal on April 24, 2026, at the Government House, Enugu, during a courtesy visit by the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Yan Yuqing, alongside officials of leading Chinese companies.
The New Enugu City project is a flagship initiative of the Mbah administration aimed at transforming the state into a modern, smart, and sustainable investment and residential hub.
Addressing the delegation, the governor proposed the creation of a Chinatown district in Enugu, assuring prospective investors of land availability and government support to ease business operations.
He described Enugu as safe, clean, and business-friendly, adding that the new city would meet global standards comparable to major international urban centres.
Mbah said the state government was committed to working closely with investors to reduce risks and ensure mutual benefits.
He also emphasised plans to strengthen partnerships with Chinese firms in infrastructure, manufacturing, and technology to drive economic growth and job creation.
The governor highlighted ongoing infrastructure improvements, including efforts to extend the Eastern railway corridor to Enugu.
He noted that China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation was already collaborating with the Federal Government on rail rehabilitation, with talks underway to extend the rail line beyond Aba to Enugu.
Mbah also pointed to Enugu’s mineral resources and the strategic importance of linking the state to export routes through the port in Onne.
According to him, the recent concession of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, would improve global connectivity through a planned cargo terminal and direct flights to Chinese cities such as Guangzhou.
He further cited existing partnerships with Haier Group, which has established manufacturing facilities in the state producing digital devices, solar equipment, and household appliances.
The governor said the partnership also includes technology transfer and capacity development for local workers.
Mbah reiterated his administration’s goal of building a $30 billion economy by 2031, driven largely by private sector investors.
Earlier, Chinese Consul General Yan Yuqing described Enugu as a city of vitality, livability, and opportunity.
She expressed optimism about deepening China-Nigeria relations, particularly in infrastructure, digital economy, education, and cultural exchange.
Yuqing added that Enugu was well positioned to benefit from stronger bilateral cooperation and pledged support in facilitating future partnerships, including possible sister-city arrangements with cities in China.
