A 37-year-old driver was arraigned before a Life Camp Magistrates’ Court in Abuja over alleged assault of a woman during a dispute over apartment occupancy.

A 37-year-old man, Daniel Adayi, was on Thursday arraigned before a Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly assaulting a woman.

Adayi, a driver who resides in Gwarinpa, Abuja, is facing a charge of assault. He pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainant, Miss Okorie Gift of Mpape, Abuja, reported the matter at the Galadima Police Station on February 19.

Nwachukwu said the complainant went to her new apartment in Gwarinpa, only to meet the defendant already occupying the premises.

She said attempts by the complainant to get the defendant to speak with the landlord were refused.

“The defendant threw a phone at the complainant and violently attacked her, beat her up and tore her clothes,” the prosecutor said.

She added that during police interrogation, the defendant allegedly made confessional statements admitting to the offence.

According to her, the offence contravenes Sections 79, 263 and 264 of the Penal Code.

The Chief Magistrate, Musa Jobbo, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum.

Jobbo ordered that the surety must provide reliable means of identification and reside within the court’s jurisdiction. The matter was adjourned until April 16 for hearing.
