NCC says it is partnering Plateau Government to expand broadband access to rural communities and strengthen digital infrastructure across the state.
The Nigerian Communications Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to expand broadband access to underserved communities in Plateau State.
Head of Public Affairs at the commission, Nnenna Ukoha, disclosed this in a statement issued Wednesday in Abuja.
She said the commitment was reiterated during a courtesy visit by the Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management, Rimini Makama, to Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, at the Government House in Jos.
Makama described Plateau as a strategic partner in advancing Nigeria’s national broadband agenda, citing its educational institutions, growing innovation ecosystem and youthful population.
She noted that although the state showed strong digital potential, many rural Local Government Areas remained underserved and disconnected from the digital economy.
According to her, the commission is exploring ways to support implementation of the Right of Way policy and deploy resources from its Universal Service Provision Fund to expand connectivity across rural communities.
Makama added that policy alignment between the commission and the state government would help build infrastructure needed for sustainable digital development.
Responding, Mutfwang commended the commission for recognising the state’s digital potential and called for practical implementation of broadband expansion initiatives.
He said the state was collaborating with the United Nations Development Programme to establish an innovation hub at Plateau State Polytechnic, Solitran, to accelerate digital development.
The governor also announced plans for a Business Process Outsourcing initiative aimed at creating jobs for at least 500 youths who would work remotely from Jos.
He emphasised the need for rapid adoption of technology-driven systems to improve governance, service delivery and opportunities in e-commerce and innovation.
