More than 30,000 Enugu teachers have endorsed Governor Peter Mbah and President Bola Tinubu for re-election, citing improved teachers’ welfare, promotions, recruitment and increased investment in education.

More than 30,000 teachers in Enugu State have endorsed Governor Peter Mbah and President Bola Tinubu for re-election in 2027, citing improvements in teachers’ welfare, promotions, recruitment and increased investment in education.

The endorsement was announced at a rally organised by the Teachers for Grassroots Movement (TGM) at Okpara Square in Enugu on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

More than 12,000 teachers reportedly marched through parts of the Enugu metropolis before gathering at the venue, while the organisers said the movement had the support of over 30,000 teachers across the state.

The teachers, drawn from public and private schools, said the Mbah administration’s education policies and investments had influenced their decision to support his second-term bid. They also endorsed Tinubu, with Mbah linking the state’s development projects to increased resources available to states under the Federal Government’s economic reforms.

The Enugu State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Theophilus Odo, praised Mbah’s administration for addressing longstanding challenges in the education sector.

Odo said the governor had supported the harmonisation of teachers’ retirement benefits before assuming office and had introduced measures aimed at improving working conditions.

He also cited the construction of more than 260 Smart Green Schools, recruitment of thousands of teachers, training opportunities and the timely payment of salaries.

According to the NUT chairman, the administration had also cleared outstanding promotions, which he described as an important development for teachers across the state.

“On behalf of the NUT, I want to say that we are happy today because God has given us a caring governor, Peter Mbah,” Odo said.

He declared the union’s support for Mbah’s re-election, saying teachers wanted the administration’s education reforms to continue.

In July, the state government announced plans to recruit more than 6,500 personnel for academic, technical and administrative positions in public schools, including staff for its Smart Green Schools.

The Enugu State Chairman of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Nelson Agu, said private school teachers were participating in such an endorsement rally in the state for the first time.

Agu said the introduction of Smart Green Schools had encouraged private school operators to upgrade their facilities and improve their standards to remain competitive.

He also commended the administration’s reported allocation of 33 per cent of the state budget to education for three consecutive years.

According to him, the investments have challenged private schools to improve their learning environments and service delivery.

The state government has separately stated that education has received 33 per cent of its annual budget for three consecutive years and that it is developing more than 260 Smart Green Schools equipped with modern learning facilities.

The Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Enugu State, Simeon Akaeme, also commended the administration, saying its investments in infrastructure and social services had helped restore teachers’ dignity.

The Director-General of TGM, Dr Nwakaego Aja, described education as a foundation for personal development, self-reliance and economic growth.

Aja said the movement represented more than 30,000 teachers across Enugu State and pledged to take its message to communities, schools, markets and polling units ahead of the 2027 elections.

She praised the governor’s education agenda, saying teachers recognised the changes being pursued by the administration.

Aja also declared the movement’s support for the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling on its members to support the party’s candidates across electoral levels.

The Commissioner for Education and patron of TGM, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, described the endorsement as an indication of support for the governor and the President ahead of the next general election.

He thanked teachers for their contributions to the state’s education reforms and said their role remained central to the administration’s development plans.

Responding to the endorsement, Governor Mbah said the support carried significance beyond the 2027 elections because the success of his administration’s development agenda depended heavily on education and the teachers responsible for delivering it.

He said the state’s ambitions to expand its economy, attract investment and strengthen tourism and business activities were closely linked to the quality of education available to its children.

Mbah highlighted projects including the construction of more than 7,000 classrooms, the provision of computers and tablets, and school feeding and uniform programmes.

He thanked teachers for their role in shaping the next generation, adding that the administration valued their contribution to the state’s future.

The governor’s wife, Mrs Nkechinyere Mbah, represented by the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Ngozi Enih, also commended the teachers’ endorsement, describing it as recognition of the administration’s emphasis on education.

The event attracted government officials, political and community leaders, education stakeholders and teachers from across Enugu State.

The endorsement adds to the political activity surrounding the 2027 elections, as supporters of the APC in the state continue to publicly declare their backing for Tinubu and Mbah.
