The Kebbi State Police Command has warned youths against blocking the Kebbi-Sokoto Federal Highway, threatening legal action against organisers and participants after a three-hour disruption to traffic.
The Kebbi State Police Command has warned youths against further blocking of the Kebbi-Sokoto Federal Highway, threatening legal action following a fresh incident that disrupted traffic for about three hours.
The warning was contained in a statement issued on Friday in Birnin Kebbi by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman.
Usman said the latest blockade occurred on Friday, following a similar incident on September 23.
According to the police, the obstruction prevented motorists, people requiring emergency medical attention and other members of the public from moving freely along the highway.
The command described the action as unacceptable, warning that blocking a major public road violates traffic regulations and could create opportunities for criminal activities.
The command urged individuals with grievances to pursue lawful avenues for addressing their concerns rather than obstructing public highways.
It recommended engaging elected representatives, traditional rulers and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) to communicate complaints and seek resolution.
“The command hereby urges aggrieved persons to channel their grievances through lawful means, including elected representatives, traditional rulers and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), rather than obstructing public highways,” Usman said.
The police warned that any recurrence could lead to investigation and prosecution, with organisers and participants held accountable in accordance with the law.
The Commissioner of Police in Kebbi State, Mr Umar Hadejia, appealed to residents to act responsibly and respect the rights of other road users.
He also urged parents and guardians to counsel their children against participating in unlawful assemblies and encourage them to respect the law.
According to the statement, the command remains committed to protecting public safety and ensuring the free movement of people and goods.
The commissioner reiterated that the police would not tolerate further road blockades, regardless of the circumstances.
The warning comes amid repeated disruptions along the highway, with the command urging residents to seek peaceful and lawful ways of resolving disputes without endangering public movement or access to emergency services.
