The African Democratic Congress has challenged Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal to provide a detailed and verifiable breakdown of projects reportedly worth more than N20 billion executed in each of the state’s 14 LGAs.
The Zamfara State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has challenged Governor Dauda Lawal to provide a detailed and verifiable breakdown of projects reportedly worth more than N20 billion executed in each of the state’s 14 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
The state ADC chairman, Kabiru Garba, made the demand in a statement issued in Gusau on Monday, following the governor’s recent claim that his administration had executed infrastructure projects valued at more than N20 billion in each LGA over the past three years.
The governor’s claim has been reported by multiple news organisations, with available reports indicating that Lawal said government records showed more than N20 billion worth of infrastructure had been delivered in each of the 14 LGAs. Lawal also acknowledged that his administration’s failure to publicly disclose the names of contractors handling the projects was a mistake and said the information would be made available.
Garba said the ADC was seeking a comprehensive account of the capital projects executed across the state since the commencement of the present administration.
According to him, public resources belong to the people, who have the right to know how government funds are being utilised and the tangible benefits derived from such expenditure.
“The Zamfara chapter of the ADC is demanding that the State Government provide a comprehensive and verifiable account of capital projects executed across the 14 Local Government Areas of the state since the commencement of the present administration,” Garba said.
He argued that if the governor’s claim of more than N20 billion in projects per LGA was accurate, the scale of investment would warrant detailed documentation and public scrutiny.
Garba therefore urged the government to provide a clear breakdown of the investments, including the projects executed in each local government area.
Responding, the Director-General, Media and Communications to the Zamfara Government, Malam Nuhu Anka, said the governor’s statement was clear and should be understood in the context of the administration’s ongoing infrastructure programme.
Anka said the N20 billion figure was justified by government spending on infrastructure and other interventions, including road networks, education and healthcare projects across the 14 LGAs.
He also cited government expenditure on security, agriculture and empowerment programmes as part of the broader investments made across the state.
The government spokesperson, however, described the ADC’s demand as politically motivated and urged the opposition party to focus on what he called constructive criticism rather than political sentiment.
