Enugu Government restricts movement from 6am to 4pm Saturday, September 26, for local government elections across 17 LGAs and 260 wards.
The Enugu State Government has announced a restriction on vehicular movement and other forms of transportation across the state on Saturday, September 26, 2026, as the state prepares for local government elections across its 17 Local Government Areas.
The restriction will take effect from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on election day, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.
The elections, being conducted by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), will produce chairmen for the 17 Local Government Councils and councillors for the 260 wards across the state.
The government said the movement restriction was intended to support the peaceful, orderly and secure conduct of the elections.
“The Government of Enugu State hereby announces a restriction of vehicular movement and other forms of transportation across the State from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, September 26, 2026,” the statement said.
However, the directive exempts ENSIEC officials and accredited election personnel, security personnel deployed for election duties, accredited election observers and authorised media practitioners.
Health workers, ambulances, firefighters and other persons expressly authorised to perform essential election or emergency duties are also exempted.
The government urged residents, political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders to comply with the directive and conduct themselves responsibly throughout the electoral process.
It also encouraged eligible voters to exercise their civic responsibilities peacefully and in accordance with guidelines issued by ENSIEC and other relevant authorities.
“Security agencies have been directed to ensure strict enforcement of this directive and to maintain law and order throughout the elections,” the government stated.
The Enugu State Police Command has separately announced a restriction on human and vehicular movement from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on election day. The police said essential-duty personnel and duly accredited election officials would be exempted.
The police also barred quasi-security outfits from participating in election security and directed armed security personnel on VIP escort duties not to escort VIPs to polling units.
The government acknowledged that the temporary restriction could cause inconvenience but appealed to residents to cooperate with the authorities, stressing the need for a peaceful, orderly and secure election.
Saturday’s election will be the first Enugu State local government poll since the previous election held on September 21, 2024.
Residents are therefore advised to plan their movements accordingly, particularly within the 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. period announced by the state government.
