Dangote Transport has unveiled a real-time Driver Monitoring Control Room in Ibese, Ogun State, allowing transport managers to monitor truck drivers nationwide and respond quickly to potentially unsafe driving behaviour.
Dangote Transport has unveiled a real-time Driver Monitoring Control Room at its operational base in Ibese, Ogun State, as part of a broader technology-driven strategy to strengthen road safety, improve driver behaviour and enhance fleet management.
The facility, recently showcased to journalists during a guided tour of the company’s transport operations centre, gives transport control personnel real-time visibility into the activities of truck drivers while they are on the road across Nigeria.
The initiative comes as large-scale logistics operators increasingly deploy technology to identify potential safety risks before they result in road crashes.
According to the company’s Head of Transport Control, Ifeanyi Ezeala, onboard cameras have been installed across thousands of Dangote trucks with the support of technology partner Nova Tracks.
The cameras provide live feeds and alerts to transport managers, enabling them to monitor driver conduct during journeys and identify behaviours that could compromise safety.
Ezeala said the objective is primarily preventive rather than punitive, allowing the company to intervene when necessary, provide guidance to drivers and address potential risks before they develop into incidents.
The system also generates operational information that Dangote Transport says can strengthen fleet management, improve decision-making and increase accountability across its transport network.
Dangote Transport said the new monitoring centre is only one component of its broader safety architecture.
The company’s Head of Operations, David Idiege, said the organisation combines technology with driver training, competency assessments and strict operational procedures to maintain safety standards across its fleet.
Other measures identified by the company include speed limiters, vehicle immobilisers, speed-control systems, facial recognition devices, journey management procedures, mandatory drug and alcohol testing, compulsory rest periods, periodic driver recertification and regular training and retraining programmes.
Idiege particularly highlighted driver fatigue as a major road-safety concern, noting that mandatory rest schedules are enforced to ensure drivers remain sufficiently alert during their journeys.
“Our approach is holistic. Technology alone is not enough,” Idiege said, stressing the importance of combining digital tools with driver welfare, operational procedures and continuous capacity building.
The deployment of the monitoring centre reflects Dangote Transport’s efforts to use digital technology to manage a large commercial fleet operating across Nigeria.
The company’s trucks transport raw materials and finished products across the country, making driver safety and effective fleet oversight critical to its logistics operations.
With the new system, transport managers can receive information about driver conduct while journeys are still in progress rather than relying solely on post-trip reports.
This real-time visibility creates an opportunity for earlier intervention in cases involving potentially dangerous driving behaviour, fatigue or other safety concerns.
Real-time driver monitoring can potentially improve road safety by helping fleet operators identify risky behaviour and intervene before an accident occurs.
However, the growing use of cameras and AI-enabled monitoring in workplaces also makes responsible data management and transparent monitoring policies important considerations.
For Dangote Transport, the stated emphasis is on prevention, driver support and accountability rather than surveillance for its own sake. The effectiveness of the system will ultimately depend on how consistently alerts are acted upon and how well the technology is integrated with driver training, rest policies and other safety procedures.
The launch of the Driver Monitoring Control Room therefore represents another significant step in Dangote Transport’s efforts to combine technology, operational discipline and driver welfare in pursuit of safer road transportation across Nigeria.
