President Bola Tinubu has celebrated Victoria Gowon at 80, praising the former First Lady for her grace, compassion, service and contribution to national development.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Dr. Mrs. Victoria Hansatu Gowon, wife of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, on her 80th birthday, describing her as a woman of substance whose life has been marked by grace, compassion and selfless service.

In a statement issued on Saturday, by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised Victoria Gowon for the role she played in supporting her husband during one of the most challenging periods in Nigeria’s history.

The President described the celebrant as a devoted wife, compassionate nurse and source of strength and inspiration to many.

“Victoria Gowon is a woman of substance, a devoted wife, a compassionate nurse and a source of strength and inspiration to many,” Tinubu said.

He added that, in her own way, she contributed positively to national development and promoted values capable of strengthening families, communities and the nation.

President Tinubu said Victoria Gowon’s 80th birthday was a significant milestone deserving gratitude to God for His grace, preservation and blessings.

He congratulated her on behalf of his family, the Federal Government and the people of Nigeria, while praying for continued good health, wisdom, strength, peace and fulfilment.

“Reaching the age of 80 is a significant milestone deserving of gratitude to Almighty God for His grace, preservation and abundant blessings,” the President said.

Victoria Gowon served as Nigeria’s First Lady during the military administration of her husband, General Yakubu Gowon, who was Head of State from 1966 to 1975. Her public life during that period placed her alongside her husband during some of the most consequential years in Nigeria’s history.

Recent tributes to Victoria Gowon have similarly highlighted her commitment to family, service, compassion and national unity. Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, for instance, described her as a figure of grace who supported reconciliation, reconstruction and nation-building during her husband’s administration.

The President’s birthday message is among several tributes celebrating Victoria Gowon’s 80th birthday.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu also celebrated the former First Lady, describing her life as an embodiment of grace, service, humility and strength. She praised Victoria Gowon’s commitment to faith, family and the wellbeing of less privileged Nigerians.

Victoria Gowon has remained a respected figure in Nigeria’s public life decades after leaving the position of First Lady. Her contribution has also been recognised through national initiatives, including the naming of the National Workplace Crèche and Nursery in her honour.
