Police in Ondo State have arrested Omowole Ikulala over the alleged killing of 77-year-old farmer Boboye Iwasanmi at Oligbe farm settlement in Okitipupa.
The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a middle-aged man, Omowole Ikulala, in connection with the alleged killing of a 77-year-old farmer, Boboye Iwasanmi, in Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred on August 15 at Oligbe Farm Settlement in Okitipupa, according to the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh.
Jimoh confirmed the arrest to journalists on Thursday in Okitipupa, saying the command had commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the farmer’s death.
According to the police spokesperson, the incident was reported by the deceased’s wife, Mrs Veronica Iwasanmi.
Jimoh said Mrs Iwasanmi had reportedly gone to fetch water on the farm and returned to discover that her husband was missing.
She subsequently found him lying in a pool of blood on the farm, with what appeared to be machete wounds around his head and neck.
Following the report, police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene, where they examined the area and commenced preliminary investigations.
The farmer’s body was later evacuated to the State Specialist Hospital Mortuary in Okitipupa for preservation and further procedures.
Jimoh confirmed that Ikulala had been arrested in connection with the alleged killing and was being investigated by the command.
“The incident was reported by his wife who stated that she returned from fetching water in the farm to discover her husband missing, only to later find him lying in a pool of blood with suspected machete wounds on his head and neck,” Jimoh said.
He added that the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Felix Ohagwu, had ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The police assured residents that the investigation would be conducted to establish the facts of the case and determine those responsible.
Jimoh also urged members of the public to remain calm and provide relevant information that could assist investigators. He assured the public that anyone found culpable after investigation would face the full weight of the law. The suspect remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court of law.
