MainPower has pledged stronger welfare, workplace safety and professional development for employees while deepening its partnership with organised labour in Enugu.

MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving employee welfare, workplace safety, professional development and constructive engagement with organised labour as the company advances its transformation of electricity distribution operations in Enugu State.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of MainPower, Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, gave the assurance on Wednesday when he received the leadership of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Enugu State Council, during a courtesy visit to the company’s corporate headquarters at Power House, Enugu.

The delegation was led by the State Chairman of NUEE, Comrade Obumneme Chime, and included the State Secretary, Comrade Njoku Uchendu, and nine other members of the council.

Welcoming the delegation, Mupwaya commended the union for adopting what he described as a constructive approach to labour-management relations, particularly its emphasis on dialogue and cooperation rather than confrontation.

He said Management, employees and organised labour shared a common interest in building a strong, efficient and financially sustainable electricity distribution company.

Mupwaya said Management had taken note of concerns raised by the union relating to staff welfare, promotion and career progression, health and safety, staffing levels, training and professional development, employee participation and recreational activities.

He assured the union that the issues would continue to receive attention through structured engagement, while stressing that sustainable improvements in employee welfare must be supported by stronger operational and financial performance.

“We must recognise that the welfare of our employees and the sustainability of the business are closely connected. As we improve operational efficiency, customer service and revenue collection, while reducing losses, we strengthen the capacity of the company to provide better opportunities and welfare for our people,” Mupwaya said.

On health and safety, the MainPower CEO described safety as a shared and non-negotiable responsibility across the organisation, stressing that no operational target should take precedence over human life.

He said the company was implementing a broad transformation programme focused on improving electricity supply, metering, customer service, revenue performance and operational efficiency.

“Achieving these objectives requires a motivated, disciplined, properly trained and productive workforce,” he said.

The emphasis on operational efficiency comes as MainPower continues to operate within Enugu’s evolving sub-national electricity market. The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) granted the company a 20-year electricity distribution licence in March 2026, formally establishing MainPower as the licensed electricity distributor in the state.

The regulatory environment has also continued to evolve, with EERC issuing orders covering areas including tariffs and estimated billing for MainPower. Its latest order on estimated billing took effect on June 1, 2026.

Mupwaya also welcomed proposals from the union on continuous professional development and recreational activities designed to promote teamwork and employee wellbeing.

He said relevant departments would engage with the union to examine how the proposals could be incorporated into the company’s programmes within available resources.

Earlier, Chime said the visit was primarily aimed at establishing and strengthening a cordial relationship between the NUEE Enugu State Council and MainPower Management.

He acknowledged the progress being made by the company and reiterated the union’s preference for dialogue, mutual respect and constructive partnership in resolving issues affecting employees.

Both parties expressed their commitment to maintaining open communication and working together to promote staff welfare, productivity, workplace safety, industrial harmony and improved service delivery to electricity customers across Enugu State.

MainPower’s wider transformation agenda includes initiatives targeting service delivery and operational responsiveness. In March 2026, the company launched a Quick Response Service at its Okpara Avenue headquarters as part of efforts to improve customer engagement.

Mupwaya received the NUEE delegation alongside members of his management team, including the Chief Commercial Officer, Mr. Ikenna Akabogu; Chief Finance Officer, Mrs. Mercy Ogbonna; Head, Health, Safety and Environment, Dr. Francis Iwu; Head, Customer Services, Mrs. Ijeoma Ogudebe; and Head, Human Resources, Delphine Nkiru Chukwuma.

The engagement underscored a shared commitment by MainPower Management and organised labour to strengthen employee welfare while supporting productivity, industrial harmony, safer working conditions and more reliable electricity service delivery in Enugu State.
