Kano State Government has conducted a mass wedding for 1,500 couples, with Governor Abba Yusuf extending special support to Haruna Bashir, a widower who lost his wife and six children, by providing a home, sponsoring his Hajj and helping him remarry.
The Kano State Government has conducted a mass wedding for 1,500 couples, in a major social intervention aimed at supporting young families, reducing the financial burden of marriage and strengthening family values across the state.
The symbolic ceremony, held on Friday at the Emir’s Palace in Kano, was presided over by the Kano State Chief Imam, Prof. Sani Zahradeen.
Governor Abba Yusuf represented the grooms, while the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented the brides during the ceremony.
The mass wedding is the second organised under the Yusuf administration.
One of the most notable beneficiaries of the programme was Haruna Bashir, who lost his wife and six children in a gruesome murder several months ago.
The Commander-General of the Kano Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim-Daurawa, confirmed that Bashir participated in the symbolic wedding ceremony.
Ibrahim-Daurawa said Governor Yusuf had taken additional steps to help Bashir rebuild his life following the tragedy.
According to him, the governor sponsored Bashir to perform Hajj and lesser Hajj, provided him with a house in Amana City, Kano, and supported his marriage to Rahinatu Jamilu-Yunusa.
“Ever since the incident that led to the death of his wife and six children, he doesn’t talk to anyone. But with this development, he is now bouncing back to normal life,” Ibrahim-Daurawa said.
The official explained that although the symbolic ceremony was held at the Emir’s Palace, other participating couples would have their marriages conducted simultaneously across their respective Local Government Areas.
Other couples featured in the symbolic ceremony included Saminu Tijjani-Isa and A’isha Muazu-Muhammad, as well as Khalifa Muhammad-Inuwa and Maimuna Muhammad-Mu’azu.
Governor Yusuf described the programme as a bold social intervention designed to restore hope, strengthen families and promote moral values across Kano State.
He said the initiative reflected his administration’s commitment to supporting vulnerable citizens by reducing the financial pressure associated with marriage and creating opportunities for dignified family life.
The governor added that the programme was designed in accordance with Islamic principles and Kano’s cultural values.
Earlier, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II delivered the Friday sermon and urged the newly married couples to build their homes on faith, patience, mutual respect and compassion.
The Emir said peaceful families were essential to building a stable and prosperous society.
The mass wedding programme also featured lectures by Islamic scholars and professionals on marriage, family responsibilities and conflict resolution.
Sheikh Aliyu Abubakar spoke on The Wisdom of Marriage in Islam, while Prof. Ibrahim Mu’azzam-Mai-Bushira addressed The Rights and Responsibilities of Spouses in Islam.
Sheikh Muhammad Nur-Arzai also provided guidance on the causes of marital conflicts and practical approaches to resolving them in accordance with Islamic teachings.
Each participating bride will receive ₦200,000, which is intended to cover her dowry and provide start-up capital for a small business.
The beneficiaries will also receive essential household items, including a bed and mattress, blankets, bed sheets and a centre rug, providing practical support as the couples begin their married lives.
