An accident involving an overturned truck on Kara Bridge in Lagos has claimed one life and injured two others after brake failure triggered a multi-vehicle collision, LASEMA said.
A fatal accident involving a truck on Kara Bridge, inward Mowe-Ibafo in Lagos State, claimed one life and left two others injured on Friday, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
LASEMA disclosed the incident in a statement issued by its Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Olawale Afolabi, stating that emergency responders were deployed to the scene at 5:46 a.m. after receiving reports of a truck blocking the highway.
According to the agency, the truck, which was carrying bags of monosodium glutamate, overturned and obstructed about 75 per cent of the carriageway.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by brake failure, which made the driver lose control of the truck before it overturned.
The incident triggered a secondary collision involving four other vehicles, including a Toyota Sienna, a mini truck transporting paint, a flatbed truck carrying imported plywood and another fully loaded truck.
LASEMA said the collision caused paint and plywood sheets to spill onto the road, further worsening traffic congestion along the busy corridor.
An adult male was trapped beneath the overturned truck and was confirmed dead at the scene.
Emergency responders recovered the victim’s body and handed it over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for evacuation.
The agency added that two other adult males sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the scene.
To prevent further incidents, emergency officials secured the area and implemented traffic management measures while recovery operations commenced.
LASEMA said two private tow trucks were deployed to remove the damaged vehicles and clear the obstruction.
The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
The agency noted that recovery efforts were ongoing to remove the affected vehicles, clear the spilled cargo and restore normal traffic flow.
LASEMA advised motorists to obey traffic diversions, comply with the directives of emergency officials and maintain safe speeds while approaching Kara Bridge.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
He also commended the professionalism of emergency responders and the cooperation of motorists throughout the rescue and recovery operation, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and property through prompt emergency response.
