Enugu State has approved major infrastructure, housing and tourism projects, including new roads, 19,000 housing units, the Ovu Lake Golf Resort and a cable car linking Okpatu Hill to Awhum Waterfall.
The Enugu State Government has approved a fresh round of major infrastructure, housing, tourism and public facility projects aimed at accelerating economic growth and transforming the state into a leading destination for investment and tourism.
The approvals were granted during the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held at the weekend.
Addressing Government House correspondents, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, alongside the Commissioners for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ben Osy Okoh; Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke; Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Dr. Patrick Ubru; Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah; and Health, Prof. George Ugwu, said the projects align with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision of growing the state’s economy from $4 billion to $30 billion within eight years.
Enugu Secretariat to Undergo Major Upgrade
The Executive Council approved the completion and upgrade of Wings C and D of the Enugu State Secretariat Complex in GRA, as well as the rehabilitation of Wings A and B.
According to Engr. Okoh, the uncompleted sections of the secretariat have remained abandoned since 2015 and will now be transformed into modern office facilities, while existing structural challenges in the completed wings will also be addressed.
19,000 Housing Units Approved
The council also approved the construction of 1,000 fully detached terrace housing units comprising four- and five-bedroom homes within the Enugu Smart City development.
In addition, the state government approved 18,000 mass housing units at the Gateway Estate to reduce the housing deficit and improve access to affordable homes.
The housing developments will include supporting infrastructure such as roads, electricity and water supply.
New Road Projects and Flood Control Measures
The Executive Council approved the immediate construction of the 10.5-kilometre Igogoro–Amachara–Ikpamodo–Okpo–Amaada Road.
It also approved emergency interventions to address flash flooding along major roads in Nsukka, including repairs of damaged drainage systems, evacuation of blocked drains and the construction of five adjoining streets.
To strengthen maintenance capacity, the government approved the procurement of more than 30 pieces of light equipment for the Ministry of Works to support direct labour and emergency intervention projects.
Landmark Tourism Projects Get Approval
The council also approved several flagship tourism developments designed to position Enugu as a premier tourism destination.
Among them is the Ovu Lake Golf Resort at Akpawfu in Nkanu East Local Government Area, which will feature an 18-hole championship golf course, a luxury hotel with over 100 rooms, a 600-seat conference centre, boat regatta facilities, landscaped gardens, clubhouses, children’s playgrounds, lawn tennis and basketball courts, alongside other recreational amenities.
The Executive Council also approved the Attakwu Tourism Development Project in Nkanu West Local Government Area, where a virgin forest and natural lake will be transformed into an ecotourism destination with an animal sanctuary and other nature-based attractions.
Similarly, the Akwuke Tourism Development Project in Enugu South Local Government Area will feature a modern sand beach, theme park, water park, scenic boardwalk and family recreation park.
Okpatu–Awhum Cable Car Project
Another major approval is the Okpatu–Awhum Cable Car Project, one of the state’s flagship tourism initiatives.
The cable car will span approximately 5.32 kilometres, connecting the Cross of Hope on Okpatu Hill to the Awhum Waterfall through three stations located at Okpatu Hill, Awhum Monastery and the waterfall.
According to the government, the project will provide visitors with a safe and scenic aerial journey while enhancing access to key tourism attractions, including a rotunda, experience centre and food court at the destination.
The latest approvals underscore the Enugu State Government’s commitment to expanding infrastructure, improving housing, boosting tourism and driving sustainable economic development across the state.
