A tragic crash in Abuja has claimed the lives of three young men after a Toyota Camry lost control and slammed into the culvert of a bridge along the Deidei–Idu–Karmo New Road in the Federal Capital Territory.
The fatal crash, which occurred at about 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, involved four young male occupants travelling in a Toyota Camry with registration number ABC 833 CE, according to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and eyewitnesses.
The FRSC Route Commander, Jubrin Lawal, who led the rescue operation, confirmed that three of the occupants died instantly.
Lawal disclosed that one of the victims’ bodies was immediately recovered, while two others remained trapped inside the severely damaged vehicle before emergency responders extricated them.
He added that the fourth occupant survived the crash and was rescued by FRSC personnel, but is currently battling for his life at a nearby hospital.
According to the FRSC official, excessive speed caused the accident, explaining that the driver lost control before the vehicle rammed into the bridge culvert with tremendous force.
The impact of the crash was so severe that the vehicle’s engine was dislodged and thrown into a nearby river.
FRSC rescue officials were forced to cut through the wreckage to recover the trapped victims before depositing the bodies at a nearby morgue.
The incident caused major traffic disruption along the busy route for several hours as emergency responders carried out rescue and recovery operations, with motorists advised to use alternative routes.
Confirming the incident, the FRSC Head of Operations, FCT Command, Sabitu Abdu, commended officers of the Deide Unit Command for their swift response.
Abdu said the prompt deployment of personnel helped rescue the lone survivor, recover the trapped victims and restore normal traffic flow along the highway.
He noted that rapid emergency response remains critical in reducing casualties and reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to protecting lives and promoting road safety across Nigeria.
