Governor Peter Mbah aggressively expands Enugu State’s agricultural support programme, approving the historic distribution of 63,000 bags of fertilisers and farm inputs to accelerate food security.

The Enugu State Government has announced a massive expansion of its annual agricultural intervention scheme, approving the free distribution of over 63,000 bags of organic and inorganic fertilisers alongside an extensive array of high-yield inputs to registered smallholder farmers across all 17 local government areas.

Making the disclosure over the weekend, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Dr. Patrick Nwabueze Ubru, stated that the aggressive scaling-up underscores Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s unwavering commitment to agricultural transformation, rural wealth creation, and long-term food security in the state.

The state-wide distribution exercise is officially scheduled to flag off on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 9:00 AM at the iconic Michael Okpara Square in Independence Layout, Enugu.

To maximize the state’s crop yields ahead of the peak harvest window, the multi-billion naira agricultural intervention package extends far beyond soil nutrients.

Shortlisted registered farmers are set to receive specialized agrochemicals, resilient cassava stems, and highly improved, pest-resistant seeds for staple crops including tomatoes, peppers, rice, and maize.

Dr. Ubru noted that this unprecedented deployment of resources is explicitly designed to reduce production overheads for agrarian communities, dramatically lower market prices for staple foods, and systematically insulate the state from national inflationary pressures.

“Governor Mbah’s administration remains firmly committed to equipping our local farmers with the modern resources needed to increase production, exit subsistence cycles, and position agriculture as the primary engine of sustainable economic growth in Enugu State.” – Dr. Patrick Nwabueze Ubru, Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation

The 2026 distribution cycle marks the single largest, most capital-intensive agricultural subsidy program in the state’s history, demonstrating a steady, data-driven trajectory of growth under the current administration’s e-governance and agrarian reform policies.

To ensure absolute transparency and guarantee that the inputs bypass political intermediaries to land directly in the hands of genuine local farmers, the Ministry has fully digitized the verification pipeline.

The Commissioner disclosed that automated SMS notifications from the verified ENSAgric portal are already being dispatched to the phone numbers of shortlisted, registered farmers, explicitly detailing their verified collection points and specific input allocations.

Urging all designated beneficiaries to be present at the Okpara Square flag-off, Dr. Ubru advised farmers to leverage these free resources to expand their cultivated land areas and actively partner with the state’s vision of converting Enugu into a dominant agro-industrial hub within the West African sub-region.
