Police in Anambra have launched a manhunt for a teacher accused of allegedly flogging a 12-year-old student to death, as investigations into the incident continue.
The Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a teacher accused of allegedly flogging a 12-year-old student to death at a school in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Awka.
Ikenga said the incident occurred on July 16, 2026, prompting the activation of the Command’s Safe School Initiative (SSI) operations under the leadership of the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Harrison Oruruo.
According to him, the SSI team has been directed to track down the fleeing teacher allegedly responsible for the student’s death.
“The Anambra Police Command has activated its SSI operations led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of Operations, Harrison Oruruo.
“The team will, amongst others, commence a manhunt for a teacher that allegedly flogged a 12-year-old student, resulting in the victim’s death at a school in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha LGA of the state,” he said.
Ikenga stated that police operatives attached to the Neni Division responded promptly after receiving the report on the evening of July 16, rushing the victim to a hospital where a medical doctor confirmed the child dead while receiving treatment.
He said the body had been deposited in the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
According to the police spokesperson, preliminary observations revealed visible marks of violence on different parts of the victim’s body, while photographs were taken as part of the investigation.
Ikenga said investigations were ongoing and assured that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Command expressed deep concern over the incident and assured the deceased’s family and the public that it would conduct a thorough, diligent and transparent investigation.
