Enugu Catholic Diocese Rejects Proposed Tinubu, Mbah Endorsement Rally at Holy Ghost Cathedral
ENUGU, June 29, 2026 – The Catholic Diocese of Enugu has distanced itself from a proposed political endorsement rally billed to hold at Jubilee Hall, Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu, declaring that the church will not permit its facilities to be used for partisan political activities.
In a disclaimer issued on Monday and obtained by this publication, the Diocese said a media announcement circulating about a “Historic Endorsement Rally and Adoption Ceremony” in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, scheduled for Friday, July 3, 2026, at Jubilee Hall, did not reflect its position. The statement was signed by the Director of Communications, Rev. Fr. Anthony Aneke.
“The Catholic Diocese of Enugu has disowned a proposed political endorsement rally for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Peter Mbah, saying Jubilee Hall, Holy Ghost Cathedral, will not host the event.”

Fr. Aneke explained that because the proposed gathering was intended as a political endorsement event, the Diocese would not allow the use of its churches, parish halls, or other ecclesiastical facilities for partisan political rallies or endorsements. “The use of Jubilee Hall, Holy Ghost Cathedral, for the said political event does not reflect the policy or position of the Diocese and therefore will not hold at the said venue,” he stated.
The Diocese reiterated that its longstanding policy prohibits the use of church-owned facilities for partisan political activities, stressing that maintaining the neutrality of its places of worship remains a guiding principle. It also urged members of the public to disregard any contrary impression created by the earlier announcement.
Expressing regret over the development, Fr. Aneke said the Diocese was sorry for any misunderstanding the circulation of the announcement might have caused. He reaffirmed that the disclaimer was issued to clarify the church’s position and prevent further confusion ahead of the proposed event.
