The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a nursery and primary school teacher who allegedly died after being assaulted over disciplining a pupil.
LOKOJA – The Kogi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a 30-year-old nursery and primary school teacher, Maryam Usman, who allegedly died after being assaulted over a disciplinary action involving a pupil.
The command’s spokesperson, ASP Afusat Saliu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Lokoja.
According to Saliu, the incident was reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Police Headquarters on June 25.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased, a teacher at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, was allegedly attacked after disciplining a pupil.
Saliu said Abdullahi Ishaka and two unidentified women reportedly stormed the school and assaulted the teacher over the disciplinary action.
“The trio allegedly assaulted Maryam Usman over her decision to discipline a pupil,” she said.
The police spokesperson stated that the teacher sustained serious injuries during the alleged assault.
She explained that the victim was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for further medical attention.
“However, she succumbed to her injuries and died on June 25,” Saliu said.
Following the report, police officers from the Olamaboro Division visited both the school and the deceased’s residence as part of the ongoing investigation.
The command said all necessary documentation had been completed, while arrangements were being made to transfer the body to the General Hospital, Ankpa, for a medical examination and autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
According to the police, the suspects fled before officers arrived at the scene, and efforts are underway to apprehend them.
Saliu added that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) once the suspects are arrested.
She assured the public that the command would conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the teacher’s death.
The identities of the two women allegedly involved in the assault, as well as the pupil at the centre of the incident, have not been disclosed.
