Over 157 golfers stormed the Enugu Sports Club for a high-profile Pro-Am tournament celebrating Governor Peter Mbah’s three-year anniversary. As Enugu prepares to host the National Sports Festival, the state government has vowed to protect historic sporting infrastructure and transform golf into a major commercial and tourism driver.

Enugu witnessed one of its biggest sporting spectacles in recent years as no fewer than 157 golfers from across Nigeria converged on the Coal City for the maiden “Swing for Governor Peter Mbah” Invitational Pro-Am Golf Tournament, a landmark event organised to commemorate the third anniversary of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s administration.

The week-long championship, which began on Monday, June 22, at the Enugu Sports Club (Golf Section) and climaxed with an elegant awards and prize presentation ceremony on Saturday night, was more than a sporting contest. It became a convergence of politics, business, tourism and investment, reinforcing Enugu’s growing reputation as an emerging destination for sports tourism and international-standard recreational events.

The tournament attracted elite amateur and professional golfers from different parts of the country, alongside political leaders, judicial officers, business executives and captains of industry, all united by a shared vision of positioning Enugu as one of Nigeria’s foremost destinations for sports-driven economic development.

A Celebration of Transformation

Declaring the event a fitting tribute to Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, the Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Lloyd Ekweremadu, described the tournament as a recognition of what he called the governor’s remarkable investments in sports, infrastructure and youth development.

“This tournament is held in Your Excellency’s honour because of the phenomenal transformation you have brought to Enugu State over the past three years,” Ekweremadu said. “It is significant that this recognition is coming from respected members of the golfing community who appreciate genuine progress and purposeful leadership.”

According to the Commissioner, the impressive participation of over 157 golfers validates Enugu State’s readiness to host the forthcoming National Sports Festival, which the state secured after a competitive bidding process.

He explained that golf was among five additional sporting events approved for inclusion in the festival by Governor Mbah, describing the decision as strategic.

“The turnout alone demonstrates that golf has enormous tourism and economic value. This is exactly the type of sporting ecosystem we intend to showcase during the National Sports Festival and beyond,” he added.

Sports as an Economic Driver

Performing the ceremonial tee-off on behalf of Governor Peter Mbah, the Deputy Governor, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, reiterated the administration’s commitment to transforming sports into a viable economic sector capable of creating employment, attracting investment and expanding tourism.

He commended Commissioner Ekweremadu for his dedication to repositioning sports in Enugu State.

“Lloyd Ekweremadu has passionately supported the government’s vision of reshaping sports development in Enugu. On behalf of Governor Peter Mbah and the people of Enugu State, we appreciate his commitment,” Ossai stated.

The Deputy Governor stressed that winning the hosting rights for the National Sports Festival was deliberate rather than accidental.

“We pursued the hosting rights because we understand that sports represent a multibillion-naira industry capable of stimulating youth development, tourism and economic prosperity. Golf alone has the capacity to generate substantial revenue if properly developed and commercialised,” he said.

He disclosed that the state government intends to engage stakeholders within the golfing community to develop sustainable investment models capable of making golf facilities financially self-sustaining while creating jobs for young people.

Government Moves to Protect Historic Golf Course

One of the high points of the ceremony came when the Deputy Governor announced immediate government action to protect the historic Enugu Sports Club Golf Course against land encroachment.

Receiving loud applause from club members, Ossai directed the Surveyor-General to meet with officials of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Golf Section’s leadership to review the official survey plan of the course.

“If any portion of this golf course has been encroached upon, government will recover it through every lawful means available,” he declared.

He described the Enugu Sports Club as one of the state’s historic assets deserving preservation as government continues to build modern infrastructure and new urban communities across the state.

“We are creating a New Enugu that competes globally, but preserving our heritage remains equally important. There is absolutely no justification for anyone to tamper with facilities that have served generations of sports enthusiasts,” Ossai said.

He also assured members that government would consider acquiring heavy-duty maintenance equipment, including tractors, to improve the course.

Sports Club Seeks Stronger Government Partnership

Earlier, the Executive Chairman of Enugu Sports Club, Augustine Ifeanyi Nweke, SAN, applauded Governor Mbah for ongoing infrastructure improvements within the club, including the asphalt paving of parking areas, installation of solar-powered facilities and other rehabilitation works.

While expressing appreciation for the interventions already received, the club appealed for additional government support to strengthen its operations.

Among its requests were the provision of a dedicated club bus, monthly financial subvention, procurement of tractors, slashers and green-cutting equipment, legal protection of the golf course survey plan against encroachment, inclusion of the Enugu Sports Club as a budget line in the state’s annual appropriation, and institutionalisation of the “Swing for Governor Peter Mbah” Invitational Pro-Am Golf Tournament as an annual sporting event.

According to the club leadership, sustained investment in golf would significantly enhance Enugu’s hospitality sector, tourism profile and overall economic development.

Breaking the Myth that Golf is Only for the Wealthy

Speaking with journalists after the tournament, Commissioner Ekweremadu challenged the long-held belief that golf remains an exclusive sport reserved for the elite.

According to him, the sport is becoming increasingly popular among young people across the world, and Enugu intends to embrace that trend.

“The perception that golf belongs only to wealthy people is gradually disappearing globally. More young people are embracing the game because of the opportunities it offers, both professionally and economically. That is exactly what we want to encourage in Enugu,” he explained.

He noted that increased youth participation would unlock fresh opportunities in coaching, hospitality, sports management, tourism, equipment sales and event organisation.

Ekweremadu also described the Enugu Sports Club Golf Course as one of the finest in West Africa.

“It would have been a missed opportunity if we hosted the National Sports Festival without showcasing one of our finest sporting assets. Enugu has built a vibrant sporting culture around football, athletics, basketball and road races. Golf is now becoming a major part of that success story.”

A Convergence of Influence and Opportunity

Beyond the competition itself, the tournament became a platform for networking among influential figures from government, the judiciary, business community and civil society.

Among dignitaries present were Hon. Raymond Ugwu, Chairman of the House Committee on Youth and Sports, Enugu State House of Assembly; Engr. Okwy Emejulu, Chairman of the Management Caretaker Committee of the Enugu Sports Club Golf Section; Vin Martin Obiora Ilo of the Golf Section Management Committee; Engr. Obiora Obiakpu, Secretary of Affairs; former Deputy Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Charles Ogbo Asogwa; former Adviser on Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Engr. Mike Ogbuekwe; Special Adviser to the Governor, Rt. Hon. Paul Nnajiorfor; and Managing Partner of GMT News Nigeria, Chijioke Ogbodo.

As trophies were presented to deserving winners and the curtains fell on the maiden edition of the tournament, many participants agreed that the event had achieved something far greater than producing champions on the golf course.

It showcased Enugu as a state increasingly leveraging sports to stimulate tourism, attract investment, preserve heritage and diversify its economy. For many attendees, the inaugural “Swing for Governor Peter Mbah” Invitational Pro-Am Golf Tournament has established a new benchmark for sports tourism in South-East Nigeria and strengthened the argument that golf can become an important contributor to Enugu’s long-term economic vision.
