Yaba College of Technology has secured nearly N80 million in TETFund research grants for two innovative projects focused on renewable energy, waste management, environmental sustainability, and food preservation.
Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has secured nearly N80 million in grants under the 2026 Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund intervention, providing a significant boost to the institution’s efforts in applied research and technological innovation.
The development was announced on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, by the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Mr. Adekunle Adams, who said two multidisciplinary research teams from the college successfully attracted funding for projects addressing critical national challenges.
According to Adams, the grants were awarded for innovative research initiatives focusing on renewable energy, environmental sustainability, waste management, and food preservation.
He noted that the achievement further strengthens YABATECH’s reputation as a leading centre for applied research, innovation, and technology-driven solutions.
One of the funded projects, titled “Smart Waste Management and Cold Chain Logistics: Integrating IoT and Biogas for Efficient Perishable Food Storage,” received approximately N41 million in funding.
The project is being led by Mr. Tairu Toyin of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and aims to deploy Internet of Things (IoT) technologies alongside biogas-powered systems to improve waste management practices and enhance the storage of perishable agricultural products.
According to the institution, the research is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, improve food security, increase energy efficiency, and promote environmental sustainability.
Members of the research team include Dr. Ismail Badmus, Mr. Ojesipe Adeoye, Mr. Badmus Babatunde, Abdullahi Akinleye, Miss Akinjaiyeju Olubunmi, and other researchers from relevant disciplines.
The second project, titled “Circular Economy: Converting Plastic Waste to Gas by Gasification,” attracted N38.78 million in funding and is being led by Dr. Ogunyemi Olumide of the Department of Chemical Engineering.
The project focuses on developing sustainable technologies capable of converting plastic waste into useful gaseous fuel through advanced gasification processes.
Adams explained that the multidisciplinary team comprises experts drawn from Biological Sciences, Urban and Regional Planning, Mechanical Engineering, and the Central Research Laboratory, as well as mentees from Vocational Education, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
Researchers involved in the project believe the innovation could provide practical solutions to plastic pollution while creating alternative energy sources for industries and communities.
The grants form part of the Federal Government’s N7.5 billion intervention through TETFund, approved for 174 research projects across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide.
Reacting to the development, the Rector of YABATECH, Ibraheem Abdul, described the grants as evidence of the institution’s sustained commitment to research excellence and innovation.
He said the college had consistently invested in research capable of generating transformative solutions in renewable energy, environmental management, food security, and industrial development.
“These grants reaffirm YABATECH’s commitment to research excellence and innovation, strengthening our capacity to develop practical solutions that address national development challenges effectively,” Abdul said.
According to the rector, the successful projects will strengthen YABATECH’s position within Nigeria’s growing knowledge economy while supporting sustainable development, environmental protection, and industrial growth.
He also commended Tertiary Education Trust Fund for its continued support of impactful research initiatives, noting that the outcomes of the funded projects could stimulate innovation, create employment opportunities, and contribute to economic growth.
Abdul described TETFund’s intervention as a strategic investment in knowledge creation and technological advancement, capable of enhancing productivity and strengthening national development.
Other beneficiaries of the 2026 National Research Fund intervention include institutions such as Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Federal Polytechnic Bida, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, and Kaduna Polytechnic.
The funding is expected to accelerate groundbreaking research efforts across Nigeria’s tertiary education sector while promoting innovation-driven solutions to pressing economic and environmental challenges.
