The Kano State Government has directed contractors to complete rehabilitation of water facilities within eight months as it intensifies efforts to address persistent water scarcity in the metropolis.

The Kano State Government has issued an eight-month deadline to contractors handling the rehabilitation of water supply facilities across the state, as it moves to address ongoing water scarcity in the metropolis.

The directive was given by the Commissioner for the Ministry of Water, Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahir Hashim, during an on-the-spot inspection of the Goron Dutse Reservoir on Monday.

Hashim expressed concern over the level of vandalism affecting critical infrastructure at the reservoir, noting that several key components had been damaged or neglected over time.

He described the Goron Dutse Reservoir as the most strategic water distribution point serving Kano metropolis.

The facility consists of three major storage tanks with capacities of 7.3 million litres, 11.2 million litres, and 22.5 million litres, giving a total capacity of 40.5 million litres.

According to him, the smaller tanks, constructed in 1930, have been abandoned for over three decades, while critical infrastructure within the facility has suffered extensive vandalism.

He noted that rehabilitation work is currently ongoing, with pipe replacement at the 7.3 million and 11.2 million litre tanks, while desilting is in progress on the largest 22.5 million litre tank.

The commissioner said the intervention was approved by Governor Abba Yusuf as part of broader efforts to restore water supply across Kano State.

He added that similar rehabilitation work is ongoing at the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants.

Authorities say the projects are expected to improve water availability in the metropolis once completed within the set timeframe.
