Nigeria and Italy launch a joint Working Group to spearhead a $5 billion financing campaign to transform learning for millions of children ahead of the Rome Global Education Summit.

Nigeria and Italy have officially agreed to establish a dedicated Working Group to implement the newly proposed Global Partnership for Education (GPE) financing initiative, an ambitious resource-mobilization effort seeking to raise five billion United States dollars for the global education sector.

Tagged the Multiply Possibility Campaign, this massive strategic initiative is specifically designed to transform learning outcomes for over 750 million children worldwide and will reach its ultimate climax at the upcoming Global Education Summit scheduled to hold in Rome, Italy, in September 2026.

Beyond its immediate funding targets, the collaborative international intervention is projected to unlock an additional ten billion dollars in domestic education financing across participating nations by the year 2030.

The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, disclosed these details during a diplomatic audience with the Ambassador of Italy to Nigeria, His Excellency Roberto Mengoni, on Wednesday.

The Minister emphasized to the Italian envoy that advancing educational infrastructure is a foundational pillar of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that the upcoming summit has become a critical imperative given Nigeria’s exceptionally high demographic of young people. She explained that the campaign and subsequent partnership will directly equip the youth with vital modern skills and employment opportunities, which will naturally help in controlling irregular migration.

Advocating for constructive dialogue on migration management, Odumegwu-Ojukwu expressed Nigeria’s keen interest in attracting green investments into vulnerable communities to keep young citizens productively engaged within domestic shores.

Earlier in the session, Ambassador Mengoni stated that the bilateral meeting was essential for both nations to align on the technical details of the summit as co-chairs of the GPE, while noting that the broader diplomatic discussions also successfully covered deepening bilateral ties across tourism, economic development, and defense cooperation.
