Lagos State Traffic Management Authority says 69 people died and 246 others were injured on Lagos roads in the first quarter of 2026.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says 69 people died on roads across the state in the first quarter of 2026.

The agency also disclosed that 246 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in accidents recorded during the same period.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, made the disclosure on April 26, 2026, during an interview with journalists in Lagos.

According to him, the authority cleared more than 600 accident scenes on Lagos roads within the first three months of the year.

He added that LASTMA also resolved more than 900 traffic infractions involving trucks and other articulated vehicles.

Bakare-Oki said the agency carried out 4,900 physical enforcement operations during the period.

He further stated that 17,942 traffic offences were captured through technology-driven enforcement systems, including the use of Traffic Management Solutions devices.

The LASTMA boss stressed that the authority maintains zero tolerance for violations on Lagos roads.

He noted that impounded vehicles linked to traffic offences would be promptly arraigned before the Lagos State Mobile Court.

Bakare-Oki said the agency had also improved service delivery by reducing travel time for residents through better traffic incident management.

He explained that all traffic equipment and recovery vehicles had undergone total overhaul and were strategically repositioned to improve emergency response times on major roads.

The General Manager added that personnel training and re-orientation had commenced to enhance professionalism and efficiency.

According to him, LASTMA has prepared a year-long training calendar running from January to December 2026.

He said the agency plans to train more than 1,000 personnel through internal and external programmes supported by consultants.

Bakare-Oki added that additional capacity-building programmes would be rolled out as the year progresses to strengthen traffic management operations across Lagos roads.
