The EFCC has begun investigating a suspected fake lawyer in Lagos after operatives allegedly discovered a forged Nigerian Bar Association seal linked to official petitions.
Operatives of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ikoyi, have launched an investigation into a suspected fake lawyer, John Anoruo, over alleged possession of a forged Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seal.
According to the commission, Anoruo, who reportedly operates a legal and educational consultancy in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, was arrested by EFCC operatives on Monday, April 20, 2026.
The case reportedly began after the suspect submitted a petition dated September 22, 2025, to the EFCC on behalf of clients against the management of Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited.
Investigators later discovered that both the original petition and a subsequent Letter of Withdrawal dated March 5, 2026, allegedly carried a forged Nigerian Bar Association seal.
The EFCC said the suspect confessed that the seal was obtained from an undisclosed business centre in Lagos.
During questioning, the 55-year-old reportedly claimed he obtained a Law degree in 2018 from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, through evening classes.
He also admitted that he did not attend the Nigerian Law School, a required pathway for legal practice in Nigeria.
The anti-graft agency stated that the suspect will be charged to court once investigations are completed.
The case has drawn attention to concerns over document forgery and unauthorised legal practice in Nigeria’s legal sector.
