President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Benin Republic’s President-elect Romuald Wadagni, pledging stronger bilateral ties, regional security cooperation, and shared economic growth.
ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Romuald Wadagni on his victory in the Republic of Benin’s presidential election held on April 12, 2026.
Wadagni, who currently serves as Benin’s Minister of Finance, reportedly secured a decisive majority of votes to emerge president-elect.
In a personally signed letter, Tinubu said the outcome reflected the confidence of the Beninese people in Wadagni’s leadership vision and public service record.
The Nigerian president also praised the government and citizens of Benin for conducting a peaceful electoral process, describing the transition as an important democratic milestone.
“This transition marks a significant chapter in your nation’s history,” Tinubu stated, while commending the resilience of the people and their commitment to peace during the election period.
He noted that Nigeria and Benin share deep historical, cultural, and economic ties, adding that both countries must continue to build on longstanding cooperation.
Tinubu said he looked forward to working closely with the incoming administration to deepen bilateral relations, strengthen regional security, and expand economic opportunities within the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union.
“As you prepare to assume the onerous responsibilities of the high office of the Presidency, I wish you wisdom, fortitude, and success,” he added.
The congratulatory message underscores Nigeria’s strategic interest in stable relations with neighbouring Benin, a key partner in trade, border security, and regional diplomacy.
